Back Ukrainian authorities agree to improve Lustration law

Just published, an “interim opinion” by the Council of Europe’s constitutional law experts, the Venice Commission, on Ukraine’s law on government cleansing (Lustration Law), welcomes the readiness of Ukrainian authorities to amend the law, so as to be more in line with the Ukrainian Constitution and European standards.

The Venice Commission adopted the opinion on Friday 12 December, during its plenary session and following discussions in Venice with Ukrainian government officials and Verkhovna Rada deputies.

In the opinion, the Venice Commission noted that “lustration must strike a fair balance between defending democratic society on the one hand and protecting individual rights on the other.”

The Venice Commission expressed readiness to provide support for an amendment, and a first visit of experts to Ukraine to continue discussions on the law is scheduled for January 2015. (more...)
