Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić will deliver a keynote speech in Berlin on 9 December at a conference entitled "70 Years of the European Convention on Human Rights - Safeguarding Human Rights in Germany and Europe" organised as part of Germany’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers.

Commemorating the 4th November 1950 signing of the landmark convention, the conference (10 am to 5.30 pm) will assess how to overcome challenges currently affecting the protection of human rights in Germany and the rest of Europe and to make the existing protective mechanisms stronger and more independent.

During her visit, the Secretary General will hold meetings with Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas and Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth Franziska Giffey.

She will meet also with Christian Lange, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection and with a delegation of German members of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly.
