International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
26 June: Statement of the Pompidou Group's Portugese Presidency

"On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Pompidou Group reaffirms its commitment to ensure that drug policies are fully respecting human rights, in line with the Council of Europe’s core mission and values. In this connection, and in light of recent developments, we recall our strong opposition to the use of death penalty in all circumstances, including for drug-related offences.

The Pompidou Group is fully committed to further develop international efforts to address the problem of drug use and abuse as a major public health challenge, and to play its role as a bridge between countries in Europe at large and beyond, while involving civil society.

Over the last days, numerous events in France have taken place to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Georges Pompidou’s election as President of the French Republic. This anniversary is also important for us, as the creation of our Group is part of his legacy."
