Portugal hosts first meeting of Permanent Correspondents since start of its Presidency

The 84th plenary meeting of the Pompidou Group’s Permanent Correspondents took place in Lisbon, on 28-29 May 2019, opened by Mrs Raquel Duarte, Secretary of State of Health of Portugal. Permanent Correspondents from the Pompidou Group member states, meeting twice a year, discussed the state of the implementation of the 4-year work programme, including reporting on past activities and planning for future events, and shared recent developments at national and international levels.

The meeting kicked-off the discussion on the statutory revision process of the Group which was launched upon decision of its member states at the 17th Ministerial Conference held last November in Stavanger, Norway. The process is aimed at reviewing the Group’s mandate, operation and working methods, in order to more adequately reflect today’s drug policy evolution and the challenges faced at national and international level. A revised Statutory Resolution is planned to be adopted by the Committee of Ministers on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Group’s foundation, which will be celebrated in 2021.

Permanent Correspondents also welcomed the launch of two reports by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly on ‘Drug policy and human rights in Europe: a baseline study’ and on ‘Involuntary addiction to prescription medicines’.
