Achieving gender equality has been a policy and development goal in the global agenda for decades. Although progress has undeniably been made, important challenges remain.

During the last two years, as part of its project “Promoting Diversity and Equality” the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe revisited its methods to integrate an intersectional approach to gender equality as an essential element to effectively address the needs and priorities of those women who are too often forgotten in national and global policymaking and their implementation.

Women who do not conform to dominant discourses and have been overlooked by our social structures and legal frameworks. Black women, indigenous women, women with disabilities, women refugees and migrants, women in poverty, and all women whose identities are far more complex than can be captured through a single lens. With the launching of the “Intersectionality Transforms our Realities” campaign, the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe suggests revisiting and reconceptualising the way we think about gender equality, by incorporating an intersectionality lens in our analysis to question dominant discourses and ideologies that perpetuate inequalities. The intersectional approach can be used by anyone who wishes to contribute to the valorisation of diversity and the promotion of social justice for all.

The “Intersectionality Transforms Our Realities” campaign, which falls within the tenth year of the Women Empowerment Programme, aims to:

raise public awareness about intersectional discrimination,

provide insights and tools for professionals and activists to put intersectional inclusion into practice in their work.

The campaign compiles the recommendations and the work of intersectionality and communication experts from and for the European, Middle Eastern, and North African regions. It is an invitation to explore our world through another perspective, advancing toward equality, diversity, and inclusion.

“Intersectionality Transforms Our Realities” will run on the North-South Centre’s social media channels for one month, inviting everyone to explore the informative and educational material developed to promote diversity and social justice for all.
