The North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, in partnership with Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development – ARDD, organised today a workshop on “Strengthening Capacities of Women Organisations” in Amman.

The workshop aims at engaging in an exchange of knowledge and practices between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, European and Southern Mediterranean countries on the subject of empowerment of women and the promotion of women’s rights through strengthening capacities of women organisations.

The workshop is also ensuring dialogue and articulation between various parties of the quadrilogue, and emphasizing the contribution of women’s civil society organisations and issue practical recommendations to achieve gender equality in the European and Southern Mediterranean regions.

The opening session headed by the Minister of Social Development, Hala Lattouf, the President of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, Jean-Marie Heydt, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Nafsika Krousti, Deputy Secretary General and Policy & Programs Manager, Jordanian National Commission for Women, Nuha Zaidah and the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development - ARDD, Adv. Samar Muhareb.

Referring to the relevance of the work of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe in the field of the Empowerment of Women, the President of the Executive Committee, Jean-Marie Heydt, commented that “it remains essential to listen to the needs of the beneficiaries and to learn from their experiences and benefit from the expertise of those who are working on the field in contact with women and women organisations.”

It is then, with a particular attention to the context and needs of beneficiaries’, from global challenges to geographical specificities, related to political and strategic recommendations, that the North-South Centre envisages its action.”

For her part, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development - ARDD, Adv. Samar Muhareb commented on ARDD’s  partnership with the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe “Working for the empowerment of women in Jordan is one of the core pillars of ARDD’s mission, so building the capacities of women-led organisations is essential. While Jordanian civil society can do a lot in this regard, support is also needed from government institutions and the international community, like the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe. This is why we must engage in dialogue and exchange ideas on achieving progress together.”

Other sessions count on the participation of Wafa Bani Mustafa, member of the Jordanian House of Representatives and Jamila Debbech Ksiksi, member of the Tunisian Assembly of the representative of the People who are presenting recent changes in the legislation concerning women rights in both countries, highlighting the major role women organisations held in the process.

The Venice Commission is also sharing the importance of the rule of law in the empowerment of women.

This event would not be possible without the institutional support of the Jordanian National Commission for Women and financing of the Government of Portugal.

The relationship between Jordan and the Council of Europe has been enhanced in the context of the implementation of the Neighbourhood Policy established by the Council of Europe in 2011, making Jordan a privileged partner in the region.

Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development - ARDD applies a holistic approach to help underrepresented and marginalized people find their voice. Since 2008, ARDD’s fight against inequity has evolved from legal empowerment to reflect the interconnected structural issues facing the Arab world. Our approaches have since grown to democracy and development mandates, as well as social protection initiatives, among other strategies. Our vision is to empower the people of the Arab world to create a democratic society where all have access to justice regardless of status.
