Balkan Regional Seminar on Global Development Education

The Balkan Regional Seminar on Global Development Education took place on the 30th and 31st of October 2017 in Belgrade, Serbia.  Over 70 participants shared experience and best practice in their respective areas of work, reflecting and preparing recommendations in the following areas:

1. Policy making and curricula development

2. Professional development of educators and quality support

3. Awareness raising and pedagogical tools

The Seminar was organised by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe with the support of the European Commission and in cooperation with the following Balkan regional partners: the Institute for Development of Education (Albania); the Centre for Peace Studies (Croatia); Forum MNE -Forum, Mladi i Neformalna Edukacija (Montenegro), the Center for Youth Work (Serbia),  the Association for Democratic Initiatives-ADI (“The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”), the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. A Representative from the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as a representative from the Slovenian NGDO platform – SLOGA, were invited as regional guests.

This event was carried out in the framework of the regional  Global Development Education (GDE) Seminars, organised in the framework of the Joint Programme between the European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe (CoE) with the aim of promoting GDE in new EU member States and candidate countries. For the period 2016-2019, the European Union is partnering with the Council of Europe, through its North-South Centre, to include Global Development Education (GDE) in formal education in the Balkans, Baltic, South East Europe and Mediterranean and Visegrad regions. Activities of the Global Education Programme are co-funded by the Civil Society and Local Authorities Programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe.

Key instrument of the external dimension of the Council of Europe, the North-South Centre (NSC) serves as a vector for transmitting its values, standards, and tools beyond the European continent through political dialogue, networking, and the implementation of cooperation projects.
As an Enlarged Partial Agreement of the Council of Europe, it brings together several European and African countries to exchange ideas and take action on shared issues.
