The working meetings for prosecutors in charge for the prosecutorial practice on adequate interpretation and citation of the European Convention on Human Rights and case-law of the European Court of Human Rights took place on 24 and 25 March in Belgrade and in Novi Sad.

45 deputy prosecutors and prosecutorial assistants from Belgrade and Novi Sad appellate jurisdictions took part in the meetings which were organised in co-operation with the Judicial Academy and the Republic Public Prosecutor’s Office with an aim to inform, train and encourage prosecutors to refer to the ECHR and ECtHR case-law in drafting prosecutorial acts and to align prosecutorial practice with relevant European human rights standards.

During the meetings, prosecutors were taught how to adequately interpret and refer to the ECtHR case-law in their acts, what is the proper technic of research and citation of the relevant cases, as well as which are the main resources and databases instrumental for obtaining timely and accurate information.

The meetings were the first in the series of events for the network of prosecutors- focal points for the prosecutorial practice, which will be organised in the upcoming period in all appellate jurisdictions to strengthen their capacity to implement European Human Rights standards in developing and harmonising prosecutorial case-law.

The meetings were organised under the Action “Strengthening the effective legal remedies to human rights violations in Serbia”, implemented under the joint programme of the European Union and Council of Europe “Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey-Phase 2019-2022”.
