How to balance between growing dependence on technology and pitfalls of digital transformation and use of artificial intelligence? What are the human rights implications brought by the technological development and risks arising from collecting and storing data, including personal and private information ? These were among numerous topics discussed by law students from the region during the Regional human rights school-Human rights and new technologies, which took place from 11 to 14 April in Fruška Gora, Serbia.

The School brought together 39 students of law from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo*, who were introduced to the main rights and freedoms impacted by new technologies, concept of algorithmic discrimination in Europe, cyber-justice and artificial intelligence as well as dynamics of social networks, data protection and freedom of expression.

Additionally, participants learned about the main actors in the proceeding before the European Court of Human Rights- roles and responsibilities of the government agent of the respondent state, of the applicant as well as those of lawyers in the ECtHR Secretariat. The very first opportunity to test gained knowledge, students had during the simulation of the hearing before the European Court of Human Rights, on the last day of the programme.

The School was organised under the action "Strengthening the effective legal remedies to human rights violations in Serbia", and supported through action "Improved procedural safeguards in judicial proceedings", both implemented under the joint programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022", as well as project "Initiative for Legal Certainty and Efficient Judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina- Phase II“.
