Presentation of the Analysis of education on human rights at the faculties of law in Serbia was organised in Belgrade on 27 May 2021.

The event brought together representatives of law faculties, judges, prosecutors, national training institutions for judiciary and for public administration, competent ministries of justice and of education, commissioner for protection of equality and Government agent before the European Court of Human Rights.

The Analysis of the education on human rights at the faculties of law in Serbia was drafted with expertise of the Institute of Comparative Law, in co-operation with the four law faculties, in Belgrade, Kragujevac, Nis and Novi Sad. The document lays out nine recommendations instrumental for increasing human rights knowledge, awareness, and culture among incoming generations of legal professionals by advancing human rights curricula and teaching methodologies at the university level. Recommendations concern, among others, introduction of the compulsory course on human rights, systemic and functional approach to human rights in other courses, advancing teaching skills of professors and assistants, cooperation between faculties and competent institutions, changes to the Law on free legal aid.

Representatives of the national stakeholders welcomed the findings of the Analysis and complemented them with few other suggestions pertinent to successful implementation of the recommendations. In the upcoming period the project team will conduct consultations with relevant authorities to ensure the follow up of the recommendations provided in the Analysis.

The presentation and the analysis were conducted within the Action “Strengthening the effective legal remedies to human rights violations in Serbia”, implemented under the joint programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
