MEDIA ADVISORY: Conference “Taking action to improve women’s participation in public and political decision making”, Sochi, 17-18 October 2019

The Council of Europe, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are currently implementing the project “Co-operation on the implementation of the Russian Federation National Action Strategy for Women (2017–2022)”. The Financial support for the project is provided by the European Union and the Council of Europe. The project focuses on developing knowledge and skills in two areas of the Russian National Action Strategy for Women (2017–2022): preventing social disadvantage of women and violence against women and fostering women’s participation in public and political life.

 

Within the framework of the project the partners are organising an awareness-raising conference for Russian stakeholders, including representatives of national and regional government, parliament, academia, NGOs and media with participation of national and international experts.

 

The main aims of the event are to: - present the research on equal participation of women and men in public and political life in the Russian Federation; - raise awareness of women’s participation in public and political decision-making and exchange good practices and experiences from other countries; - discuss actions to promote equal participation of women in public and political decision-making with a focus on legal, policy and institutional measures.

 

Alexey VOVCHENKO, First Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection, will open the Conference. Welcome speeches will be given by Petr SICH, Head of the Programme Office of the Council of Europe in the Russian Federation, Mikhail VINOGRADOV, Deputy Head of Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, Vladimir KASHIN-PADUN, Head of Division at the Department of European Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oksana PUSHKINA, Deputy Chair of the Committee on family, women and children affairs of the State Duma, Member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Jette CHRISTENSEN, Member of the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Jolita PONS, Head of the Political section of the European Union Delegation to the Russian Federation and Caterina BOLOGNESE, Head of the Gender Equality Division of the Council of Europe.

 

International experience will be presented by representatives of Bulgaria, Finland, France, Italy, Moldova, Slovenia and Spain. English-Russian and Russian-English interpretation will be provided in all sessions.

Registration of participants: 09:30-10:00 (17 October), 9:00- 9:30 (18 October) local time.

The entire conference will be open for press coverage.

Press conference with panelists starts on 17 October at 11:00 until 11:40.
