International Conference on Child Friendly Justice

On 2 and 3 December the 7th International Scientific and Practical Conference "Child-Friendly Justice" was held in Ulan-Ude, the capital of the Republic of Buryatia. The conference was co-organised by the Buryatia State University, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Buryatia, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Buryatia, the Irkutsk Youth Foundation for Human Rights Defenders "Juventa", the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Republic of Buryatia, the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Irkutsk Region and the Council of Europe Project on Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals "HELP in the Russian Federation".

The event was opened with a plenary session in the Government House of the Republic of Buryatia, where welcoming remarks to the conference were made by Mr Vladimir Pavlov, Chairman of the National Khural of the Republic of Buryatia, Mr Vyacheslav Tsybikzhapov, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Buryatia, Ms Albina Kirillova, Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Buryatia, Mr Vyacheslav Damdintsurunov, Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Ms Ekaterina Gorbatova, Head of Unit of the European Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Mr Sergey Dikman, Head of Unit for Cooperation with the Russian Federation of the Directorate General for Human Rights and Rule of Law, Council of Europe, and others.

After the plenary session the Buryat State University hosted a roundtable devoted to the launch of the HELP courses "Introduction to the European Convention and the European Court, Execution of ECtHR judgments", " Reasoning of judgments", and "Child-friendly justice".

The participants were judges and assistant judges from the Republics of Buryatia, the Republic of Khakassia, the Irkutsk Region and other regions, as well as professors from higher education institutions in Siberia and the Far East, more than 90 participants in total. The event was held both in person and remotely.

The trainers were Council of Europe experts Ms Marina Khatuntseva, Mr Dmitry Gurin and Ms Natalia Kravchuk.

On 3 December, the HELP project organised a training of trainers on the HELP methodology for professors of higher educational institutions and representatives of the legal community of the Republic of Buryatia.
