MONEYVAL carries out evaluation visit to Bulgaria

A team of evaluators from the Council of Europe's Committee of Experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering Measures and the Financing of Terrorism (MONEYVAL) carried out an onsite visit to Bulgaria from 6 to 17 September 2021.

The onsite visit is being held in the framework of a mutual evaluation aimed at assessing Bulgaria's technical compliance and effective implementation of international standards in the area of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT), in line with the 2013 Methodology of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

The evaluation team was composed of MONEYVAL experts with a legal, law enforcement and financial background and supported by members of the MONEYVAL Secretariat.

The evaluators were received by the Financial Intelligence Directorate of the State Agency for National Security (FID - SANS) and representatives of other relevant authorities. During the onsite visit the evaluators met with judicial authorities and operational agencies, financial and non-financial sector bodies and supervisors. Several meetings were held with private sector representatives (e.g. financial institutions, notaries, lawyers, real estate agents, casinos, e-money and virtual asset service providers) and representatives from non-profit organisations.

The report will be scheduled for discussion and adoption at MONEYVAL’s 63rd Plenary meeting in spring 2022.
