In March 2021, three NGOs, Save the Children, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and Jugend Rettet, have been probed by prosecutors in the city of Trapani over suspicions of aiding illegal immigration. According to reports in the Italian press on 2 April 2021, investigators seeking to establish links between migrant rescue operations at sea and traffickers monitored the communications of journalists working on the issue, intercepting phone calls between journalist Nancy Porsia and her lawyer, Alessandra Ballerini. The investigation is said to include a list of sources and contacts of other journalists, including Nello Scavo (Avvenire), Sergio Scandura (Radio Radicale), Francesca Mannocchi (L'Espresso), Claudia Di Pasquale (Report), Fausto Biloslavo (Il Giornale).

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the National Federation of the Italian Press (FNSI) announced that they will request the Italian authorities to explain this "massive violation of the confidentiality of journalists' sources".
