Death Threat Against Journalist Costas Constantinou
On 20 July 2018, journalist Costas Constantinou has received a death threat on Facebook under his opinion post, marking the day of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The journalist also broadcast his criticism of what was done in the aftermath of the Turkish Invasion through a radio discussion programme, identifying those who he said had benefited from it. His post was shared with a Facebook group "Dimokratiki Paremvasi" (Democratic Intervention), which has over 20 000 members. One of the comments posted in response said "someone should put a bullet through his head to end this. A Turk in every sense of the word". Costas Constantinou has regularly aired his views on political and social issues in Cyprus in his column and radio programmes in media owned by the Politis group, which is regarded as controversial in some circles. The journalist has also received anonymous threats and derogatory comments about his work in the past. The case was reported to the Chief of Police of Cyprus.
