On 20 September 2016, weekly MK Chernozemye publisher Denis Shaikin was arrested and beaten up by police while he was leaving the police station with his lawyer in Kursk, Western Russia. He suffered severe head injury requiring hospital treatment.

The Russian Union of Journalists (RUJ) believes that this attack is linked to the publication in mid-September of an investigation report alleging involvement of the deputy head of Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in the Kursk region in alcohol-smuggling. Following the publication, Denis Shaikin reportedly received threats by phone.
