DİHA Journalist Detained at March for Kurdistan Workers' Party Founder
On 14 February 2016, Asya İnedi, a reporter for Kurdish-language news agency Dicle News Agency (DİHA), was detained in the Istanbul suburb of Sultanbeyli. İnedi was reporting from a march held for the anniversary of the capture of Abdullah Öcalan, one of the founders of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, PKK. She was brought to a police station in Sultanbeyli. DİHA reported that there was no reason for İnedi to be detained. Evrem Kepenek, another DİHA reporter, tweeted on the evening of 14 February that lawyers were going to the police station to represent İnedi. Several DİHA journalists have been detained and arrested in recent months.
06 Dec 2018: Asya İnedi was released after completion of a criminal record check on 14 February 2016. On 6 December 2018, the partner organisations to the Platform declared this case to be “resolved”, concluding it was no longer an active threat to media freedom.
