On 19 June 2018, the journalist and writer Hakan Gülseven contributing for Yurt newspaper was sent to prison when he could not pay the penalty he was convicted in 2014 following his article harshly critizing the former governor of Sakarya Hüseyin Avni Coş published in Yurt newspaper on 11 November 2013. Mr Gülseven was tried for "insulting a public official for his public services" and handed down an 11 month and 20 day jail sentence, which the court later commuted to a 7,000 TL fine. The Yurt daily could not pay the fine and the verdict has now been converted to 350 days in prison.
Resolved
06 Dec 2018: On 20 June 2018, Hakan Gülseven was released. On 6 December 2018, the partner organisations to the Platform declared this case to be “resolved”, concluding it was no longer an active threat to media freedom.
