On 11 June 2018, Berzan Güneş, a journalist for the pro-Kurdish Mezopotamya online news agency has been put in pre-trial detention due to his social media postings as a part of an investigation by Iğdır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The journalist appeared before the court on accusations of making propaganda on behalf of a terror group and was put behind bars later in the day. Mr Güneş’ camera and electronic devices were seized.

Berzan Güneş was detained at a police checkpoint on his way to cover a news story in the city of Şırnak. According to Turkish authorities, he was arrested on charges of “disseminating propaganda for the terrorist organization”, referring to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). He was taken to Şırnak T Type Closed Prison.

On 6 August 2018, journalist Berzan Güneş was released and placed under judicial control by Iğdır criminal court. A international travel ban was also imposed on him.
