On 12 July 2018, journalist Marilù Mastrogiovanni of the Sicilian newspaper "Il Tacco" was targeted with death threats that flooded her professional email account. "Il Tacco" reported that this was not the first occasion the journalist had been subjected to intimidation attempts, and that the level of protection for her and her family had been increased. The death threats followed a publication on "Il Tacco" covering relations between organised crime and tourism business. Two weeks before the death threats, bags of rubbish were thrown into backyard of Mastrogiovanni's home, following a series of similar cases against her. The local authorities are investigating the situation.
