Aslı Ceren Aslan, the editor-in-chief of the Özgür Gelecek newspaper, was detained on 9 Febuary 2017 in Turkey's southeastern Urfa province on charges of “border violation” and “being a member of an [illegal] organization”. She reportedly denied the charges and said she had been reporting on the latest developments in northern Syria. Aslan's attorney said that Aslan had been arrested for being a member of an [illegal] organization although there was no such evidence and noted that Aslan had been beaten in detention and was forced to strip naked for examination in Ceylanpınar Gendarmerie Command and Urfa Anti-Terror Department.
