On 8 June 2020, two journalists – Müyesser Yıldız, Odatv Ankara bureau news editor and İsmail Dükel, Ankara correspondent of TELE1 – were taken into police custody during early morning raids on their homes. Yıldız was reported to be detained on allegations of “military espionage” while the initial charges against Dükel was unclear. Local news reported that Yıldız was detained as part of an ongoing military espionage investigation by Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Their lawyers reported that their requests to access documents and further information on the charges were rejected because of a constraint order on the file. On 12 June, journalist Yıldız was formally arrested while Dükel was released after giving his statement.
