Dutch Journalist Charged with ‘Terrorism’ in Turkey
Fréderike Geerdink, a Dutch freelance journalist and correspondent in Turkey, appeared before the court in Diyarbakir, Turkey on Wednesday 8 April 2015. Fréderike Geerdink specialises in the Kurdish issue (www.kurdishmatters.com) and has recently published a book about the Roboski massacre. She lives and works in the city of Diyarbakir. On 6 January 2015, Geerdink was arrested by an anti-terrorism unit of the Turkish police and was briefly detained. According to the authorities in Turkey, Geerdink is accused of spreading propaganda for the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party in Turkey. The Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned the arrest and prosecution of Geerdink, saying that the accusations charges against Geerdink are in breach of international human rights law and treaties ratified by the Turkish government on freedom of expression.
