Investigative Journalist Receives Death Threats, Targeted by Attempted Arson Attack
Journalist Federico Ruffo was the target of an attempted arson attack after carrying out an investigation into links between the Calabrian mafia, the ‘Ndrangheta, and the fan club of the Turin-based football club Juventus for public broadcaster RAI. He had already received threats via social media before the foiled arson attack, and after the attack received further messages telling him that the ‘Ndrangheta should "finish off the job". The journalist was at home near Rome when early morning on 13 November 2018 a red cross was painted on his walls and petrol was poured on to the doorway. The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media condemned the attack and called on the authorities to fully investigate and punish the perpetrators.
