Dutch Biggest Daily De Telegraaf Attacked in Latest Incident Targeting Media
A van was deliberately rammed into the façade of De Telegraaf’s headquarters in Amsterdam, causing considerable damage to the façade of the building housing the Dutch biggest newspaper. This was a second incident targeting media organisations in less than a week, following an attack on the offices of Panorama were shot at with an anti-tank missile. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack. In the meanwhile, De Telegraaf reporter John van den Heuvel is under police protection because of death threats he received from criminals gangs for his reporting on crime. Another journalist, Paul Vugs who works for Parool, currently lives in a safe house after he also received threats to his life from organised crime.

On 8 April 2019, the police authorities and special forces raided homes and offices in Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague, arresting 12 suspects in connection with the attack.

On 19 July 2018, the National Police, the Office of the Public Prosecutor, the Dutch Association of Journalists and the Dutch Society of Editors in Chief concluded an agreement to improve awareness, training and guidance for the police authorities on the safety of journalists. Media outlets will report any incidents, provide safety training and set up security plans.
