On 11 October 2018, the Italian journalist Filippo Mele, working for the daily local newspaper La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno, received an envelope containing a bullet, a red pen and a sheet of white paper. The envelope was left in the country house of the journalist.

According to La Gazette del Mezzogiorno, this death threat is likely to be linked to the work of Filippo Mele. He has been working until very recently on an investigation exposing three criminal groups operating in Metapontino, Southern Italy, which resulted in their dismantling a few days ago. The clans' activities were mainly operating in drug trafficking and extortion from local entrepreneurs.
