The Istanbul 9th Criminal Court of Peace blocked Gazeteport, BBC Türkçe, The Independent and Diken’s coverage of the money laundering investigation launched in Italy against Bilal Erdoğan, the Turkish President's son. The blocking request was made by Bilal Erdoğan's attorney on July 26 and approved a few hours later. The court decreed the articles about Bilal Erdoğan "cannot be considered within the limits of freedom of the press, freedom of expression and the right to information and criticism, but qualify as a violation of personal rights".
The money laundering investigation followed accusations in February 2016 by Murat Hakan Uzan, a businessman and an opponent to President Erdoğan, who alleged that Bilal Erdoğan brought large amounts of money to Italy in September 2015 without declaring this to the authorities.
