20 Mayors of towns, cities and villages from four regions of Ukraine gathered on 2-3 March in Vinnytsya confronted their experience on opportunities and challenges that they are facing in Ukraine at the occasion of the workshop “Mayors leaders for change”, organised by the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities within the project “Promoting local democracy in Ukraine”.
The workshop was opened by Mr Serhiy Morgunov, Mayor of Vinnytsya and Member of Congress, Mr Andreas Kiefer Secretary General of the Congress and Ms Nataliya Romanova, Vice President of the Congress.
“Local democracy and quality of services available in the community are very much connected to the capacity of local authorities to prioritize, gather teams and implement initiatives that target inclusively various members of the community. Therefore we at the Congress pay great attention to supporting mayors and providing platform for peer-to-peer learning and sharing of experiences.”- said Mr Andreas Kiefer.
The objectives of the workshop were to improve understanding of their role and responsibilities in the position of mayors; to enhance mayors’ leadership and communication skills in the context of local political governance and decision-making process; to become more acquainted with democratic tools for engaging citizens into local decision-making processes; and finally to improve awareness on ethics in politics and decision-making at local level. Participants discussed practical recommendations on how mayors can fight corruption and unethical behaviour
