International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

For the 25th of November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Council of Europe is putting a spotlight on the digital dimension of violence against women and girls.

Violence against women occurring offline is replicated and intensified through digital means. On the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, new tools and studies will be published by the Council of Europe to raise awareness of online violence against women and how the Istanbul Convention addresses them.

Important dates in Council of Europe’s observation of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women include:

  • 24 November from 15:30 to 17:30 CET. Launch of General Recommendation No.1 on the digital dimension of violence against women and girls, by the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO).   • 24 November: Joint statement by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and the Italian Presidency of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers
  • 24 November: Joint statement by the Council of Europe office in Ukraine, the EU Delegation to Ukraine, and the EU Advisory Mission for Civilian Security Sector Reform (EUAM Ukraine) in Ukraine.
  • 25 November: International Day for the Elimination of violence against women + beginning of the 16 days of Activism against gender based violence
  • 25 November from 14:30 to 15:30 CET. Panel discussion on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, hosted by the Gender Equality Commission (GEC) and the Italian Presidency of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, featuring the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the Italian Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family, and the GREVIO President.   • 26 November: Release of new Violence Against Women section of the webpage on the Impact of the European Convention on Human Rights
  • 7 December: Publication of a Study assessing the relevance of the Istanbul and Budapest Conventions in addressing online and technologyfacilitated violence against women.
