Back Online presentation "How media cover 2020 local elections in Ukraine - results of two monitoring"

On October 8 an online presentation of the interim results of two monitoring of media coverage of the 2020 local elections in Ukraine is to be held.

The aim of the monitoring is to assess the behaviour of the media during the election campaign as a basis for discussions on objectivity and quality of media coverage of the elections in line with international standards and best practices on freedom of expression and independence of media.

The first monitoring was conducted by a coalition of NGOs with the support of the project “EU and Council of Europe working together to support freedom of media in Ukraine”. The presentation will outline the topics and tone of the news, the quality of media materials and their compliance with election legislation, gender aspects, etc.

The second monitoring was conducted by the NGO “Detector Media”, which during the election period investigated Russian and pro-Russian disinformation narratives in national media and in the media space of eight eastern and southern regions.

Representatives of the media, civil society, government and local authorities are invited to participate.

Registration for the event is required until October 6 inclusive at the link. Confirmation of participation will be sent by e-mail on October 7.

The monitoring was conducted by the coalition of civil society organisations consisting of Journalism Ethics Commission, “Human Rights Platform”, “Ukrainian Institute of Media and Communication”, “Stop Fake (Ukraine)” and association “Women in media” during the period of 5 September - 25 October 2020. covering the content of local socio-political online-media with the biggest audience in 12 regions of Ukraine, as well as the social network Facebook.
