The legal club “PRAVOKATOR” was opened in Kharkiv on 18 May 2018 by the deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine Ms Svitlana Glushchenko, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine Mr Mårten Ehnberg, executive director of the International Renaissance Foundation Mr Oleksandr Sushko, the program officer of the Policy, Planning and Coordination unit of the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Ms Maria Skirk, US Department of State and the Director of the Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Provision Mr Oleksiy Boniuk.
This is the third legal club out of five being established by the Ukrainian free legal aid system in five major cities. The legal clubs are aimed at the institutionalisation of the free legal aid training system, conducting training for other legal professionals, representatives of the local communities and civil society, including joint training activities; exchange and spreading of the best legal practices; networking and facilitation of cooperation between the justice sectors stakeholders; raising legal awareness of the public and legal empowerment of the territorial communities.
The official opening was followed by a panel discussion “Defence lawyers and prosecutors: working together for justice and human rights”. Representatives of the lawyers’ community, prosecution service, civil society, national and international experts discussed various aspects of cooperation, professional development, awareness-raising and found common ways on enhancement of access to justice and human rights protection.
The opening event of the Kharkiv legal club was organised with the assistance Council of Europe Project “Continued Support of the Criminal Justice Reform in Ukraine” funded by the Danish government. The Council of Europe stands ready to cooperate with the newly-established legal clubs, and to facilitate joint efforts in the justice sector for better protection of human rights.
