The Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention is a human rights convention?

It aims to combat violence against women and domestic violence?

It was agreed on by all European countries?

The aim of the Istanbul Convention is to counter the devastating effect gender-based violence has on women’s lives and to help states prevent, protect and prosecute these crimes. It responds to our fears that the women and girls in our life may be attacked or hurt and to provide justice and support if they are.

On the 8 March, International Women’s Day, the Violence Against Women Division at the Council of Europe will be releasing ‘8 Questions on 8 March’, an interactive questionnaire designed to raise awareness of the Istanbul Convention and get the views of as many people as possible about what they think the priorities are in the quest to end violence against women and girls.
