On 11 October 2017, the Council of Europe will organise a seminar in Yerevan (Armenia) to present the “Gap analysis of Armenian criminal law in light of the standards established by the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence” developed under the Violence against Women project implemented by the Violence Against Women Division of the Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Human Rights Defender of Armenia and with the support of the Council of Europe Office in Yerevan.
The Violence against Women multi-country project aims at raising awareness of the standards offered by the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) and building the capacity of national institutions to tackle all forms of violence against women.
Using the Istanbul Convention as a tool, a team of international and national experts reviewed the Armenian criminal legislation and identified legal gaps but also strengths. This targeted study focused on criminal legislation as an effective judicial response to violence against women and domestic violence lie in vigorous and effective legal frameworks that transmit a zero tolerance official attitude towards violence against women in society.
This seminar in Yerevan will not only present the results of the gap analysis to local stakeholders and decision-makers but serve as a forum of exchanges among national and international stakeholders.
