Council of Europe’s expert group on violence against women visits France

A delegation of the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) will carry out an evaluation visit in France from 8 to 12 October 2018. This visit is one of the steps in the procedure to monitor the implementation by France of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

The Istanbul Convention is based on the understanding that states must fully address gender-based violence in all its forms and take measures to prevent such violence, protect the victims and prosecute the perpetrators. France is the tenth state party to undergo the procedure.

Meetings will be held with the Inter Ministerial Delegate for Women's Rights and Equality between Women and Men, as well as several ministries (Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Solidarity and Health, Ministry of Overseas, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, Ministry of Culture). Meetings with civil society and NGOs will include representatives of specialist services, as well as lawyers working in the area of violence against women. GREVIO will also meet with several institutions, including the Inter Ministerial Mission for the Protection of Women against Violence and the Fight against Trafficking in Human Beings (MIPROF), the High Council for Equality (HCE), and the Delegation for women's rights and equality between women and men of the National Assembly and the Senate.

GREVIO plans to publish its evaluation report during 2019.
