Exchange of views between the President of GREVIO and the Committee of Ministers

During her last exchange of views with the Committee of Ministers, the outgoing President of GREVIO Professor Feride Acar, provided an overview of the work of GREVIO since its establishment in 2015 and her activities as the first President of GREVIO .

The President of GREVIO shared with the Minister’s Deputies achievements, challenges, the importance of international cooperation, the need to stand up to the backlash against women’s rights in general and the Istanbul Convention in particular, and priority areas of work for the future.

The President of GREVIO stressed how GREVIO’s accomplishments so far have built the foundation and set the path for a strong and independent monitoring mechanism as depicted in the Convention. She underlined further the exemplary co-operation between GREVIO and the Committee of the Parties chaired by Ambassador Walaas.

In referring to the Conference "Women's rights at the crossroads" on the improvement of international co-operation to end violence against women, Ms Acar indicated that the conference proved once again that co-operation and synergies among organisations and stakeholders in different global and regional entities around the world is the only viable strategy for success. She recalled that ending violence against women and girls is a condition and accelerator towards the achievement of sustainable development goals and that proactively building alliances with other mechanisms and organisations is instrumental in achieving these goals.

In the discussions and exchange that ensued, a large number of delegates expressed their firm support for the Istanbul Convention and their desire to continue to promote it. Delegates also shared their appreciation for GREVIO’s work and highlighted the positive impact which ratification and evaluation of the implementation of the convention has had in their countries.

The Ministers’ deputies congratulated Professor Acar for her excellent leadership of GREVIO and her personal commitment and contribution to the cause of preventing and combating violence against women, for which she was awarded the Council of Europe Pro Merito Medal.
