Council of Europe’s expert group on violence against women visits Spain

A delegation of the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) will carry out an evaluation visit to Spain from 25 September to 2 October 2019. This visit is one of the steps in the procedure to monitor the implementation by Spain of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

The Istanbul Convention is based on the understanding that states must fully address gender-based violence in all its forms and take measures to prevent such violence, protect the victims and prosecute the perpetrators.

The GREVIO delegation will hold high-level exchanges, including with the Secretary of State for Equality, as well as the Deputy Prime Minister, representatives of the Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with Parliament and Equality, the Government Delegation for Gender-Based Violence and the Women’s Institute. It will also exchange with a wide range of ministries, including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Education and Professional Training, Ministry of Employment, Migration and Social Security as well as the regional authorities in Andalusia, the Basque Country, Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid.

Meetings with civil society and NGOs will include representatives of specialist service providers, professional networks, academics, as well as lawyers working in the area of violence against women.

GREVIO plans to publish its baseline evaluation report on Spain during 2020
