What is app’ning in your city - Discover a truly innovative and effective way of encouraging new citizens to engage in the cultural life of the community

During a webinar on 17 May (16h00-17h30 CET (10 am EST) you will learn about Canoo, a mobile app developed and delivered by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship that offers new citizens and families one year of free entry to Arts, Culture and Recreation institutions across the country. Canoo increases a sense of belonging among newcomers and the intercultural character of the cultural offer, while building new and diverse audiences and encouraging travel, discovery and exploration.

The webinar will be of interest to those responsible for Arts and Culture within municipalities, as well as those responsible for welcoming newcomers and intercultural integration. It would also be of interest to heads of Arts and Culture institutions – museums, art galleries, and science centres.

Amy Matchen, Director of Programs and Yasmine Mohamed, Director of Digital Programs, will present about how and why Canoo was developed, its impact on newcomers, on the Arts and Culture sector and on cities, and will take your questions about adopting or adapting Canoo for European Intercultural Cities.

During the second half of the webinar you will learn about Portugal Incoming, an app developed by the national network of Intercultural Cities in Portugal. The member cities have together worked on the content of the app to ensure real inclusion is possible. The app is intended for persons who have recently arrived in Portugal and who are learning to navigate the Portuguese system and services as well as for technical staff of the support and welcoming services. The app contains information in the areas of legislation, employment, health, social security, education, justice, language, useful services and heritage, religion & history. The app was launched in 2020 and has already been translated into five languages.

Carla Calado, coordinator of the national network of Intercultural Cities in Portugal (RPCI) will present on the background off the app, the development process and lessons learned. The session will close with a Q&A.
