Hate speech is not an option in Serbia!

A two-day training for media representatives on the concept and forms of discrimination and hate speech, with an emphasis on the vulnerability to hatred of LGBTI people, was organised from 4 to 6 July 2021. The training was held within the joint European Union and the Council of Europe action on "Promotion of diversity and equality in Serbia", which is part of the "Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022" programme.

During the training, that was realised in partnership with the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, representatives of journalists' associations and the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media had the opportunity to learn more about the work and role of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, as well as the role of civil society organisations in combating discrimination and hate speech. Also, the participants were acquainted with the normative framework for protection against discrimination and the results of research on hate speech in the media in Serbia from the Report on the use of hate speech in the media in Serbia.

The aim of the action “Promotion of diversity and equality in Serbia” is to strengthen the capacity of national and local actors to better address issues related to the fight against discrimination, hate speech and the protection of the rights of national minorities and LGBTI people, in accordance with the European standards and recommendations set by the Council of Europe.
