Online discussion about access to education during the corona virus outbreak

On 6 May live discussions “Human Rights Talks: Equality Matters” focused on the access to education during coronavirus outbreak. The guests of the fifth online talks were Eka Dgebuadze, the Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Lia Tabatadze, the Head of the Georgian Down Syndrome Association and TV school teachers – Natia Purtseladze, Victoria Abramiani, and Leila Gulieva.  

The Deputy Minister talked about the current challenges regarding the access to education during the pandemic, such as limited internet access, challenges faced by ethnic minorities and people with disabilities, and future plans. Lia Tabatadze shared her personal story and recommendations as a mother of a down syndrome child on how to cope with problems generated by the coronavirus crisis. TV school teachers shared their experience while working on the project underlining several tips for children on how to make the most of the online classes.

The series of online discussions “Human Rights Talks: Equality Matters” are the joint initiative of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia and the Public Defender’s Office organised in the framework of the ‘I Choose Equality’ campaign run by the co-operation project “Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia”. The project is implemented under the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Georgia 2016-2019 with the support of the Danish Neighbourhood Programme in Georgia (DANEP).
