Municipality representatives and youth develop initiatives in response to hate speech and discrimination

On 10 August, the Council of Europe and the State Ministry for Reconciliation and Civic Equality completed the training course “We together, We CAN!” against hate speech and discrimination. The course was conducted in two parts: the first part took place online on 27 July-4 August, and the second part was conducted offline on 6-10 August. The trainings were carried out by the Human Rights Association NGO.

Municipality representatives and youth from Kvemo Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Adjara and Akhmeta municipalities participated in the trainings.

The online course introduced participants to the Council of Europe definitions of human rights and hate speech, hate crimes, structural development of hate speech and discrimination. They also participated in online exercises in order to learn how to address racist stereotypes, prejudices, hate speech and discrimination through alternative narratives and to learn about non-formal education manuals of the Council of Europe.

The offline training course created a space for participants to explore different practices, methods and experiences on fighting against hate speech online and offline and encouraged participants to explore activities that they could organise during the follow-up phase.

Youth participants were also able to map the possibilities of different counter-narratives as well as develop them. The follow-up phase to the training courses involves co-operation between the municipality representatives and youth on joint projects addressing discrimination and hate speech in their communities and beyond.

This activity was conducted in the framework of the “I Choose Equality campaign run by the co-operation Project “Fight against Discrimination, Hate Crimes and Hate Speech in Georgia”. The project is implemented under the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023 with the support of the Danish Neighbourhood Programme in Georgia (DANEP).
