On 1 June 2017, His Excellency Minister of Justice of Greece, Mr Stavros Kontonis visited the Council of Europe and held talks with Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland and representatives of the Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law.

Minister Kontonis outlined his priorities for the on-going reforms within the Greek judicial system and how he saw a future contribution by the Council of Europe and its European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) to this important work, for example as regards court management and the acceleration of justice.

The Minister also presented a number of steps planned by Greece as regards the penitentiary infrastructure.

In the field of integration of human rights into the training of Greek judges and prosecutors, the Minister suggested involving Greece in the European Programme for Human Rights Training for Legal Professionals  - “HELP”.

The Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law welcomed the initiative by Minister Kontonis to develop further the existing strong cooperation with the Council of Europe, and the opportunity to discuss new ideas with him. The Minister’s visit will be followed up by discussions at working level to take the collaboration forward.
