The Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law (DGI) is actively involved in strengthening governance in the Eastern Partnership region through the European Union’s and the Council of Europe’s facility Partnership for Good Governance – phase II (PGG II). It does so by bringing legislation and practice closer to European standards in the fields of human rights, rule of law and democracy.

DGI’s intervention is based on the Council of Europe standards and support is being provided through its cooperation activities. PGG II has been conceived to address issues identified by the findings of the Council of Europe monitoring mechanisms and along the priorities defined by the EU in the 2020 Deliverables.

Effective implementation of judicial reforms and the fight against economic crime, notably corruption, money laundering and terrorist financing are the focus of DGI’s intervention under PGG II.

On the occasion of a webinar “Improving the lives of citizens through better governance”, organised on 5-7 October 2020 to reflect on the mid-term result of the second phase of the PGG, Christos Giakoumopoulos, Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, Gianluca Esposito, Head of the Action against Crime Department, Secretary General of the Group of States Against Corruption (GRECO), and Ramin Gurbanov, President of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) gave an overview of the type of actions carried out and the achievements accomplished in all six countries, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus.
