What are human rights?

Human rights are not optional
9'30" 16 October 2010 United for Human Rights Los Angeles

This film is produced by the American non-governmental organisation United for Human Rights. It explains in detail what human rights are and how they apply to people’s lives. Sometimes people don’t think about what human rights entail in practice. Human rights are those rights and responsibilities that every person enjoys by virtue of being a human being. They cannot be taken away and are upheld by international law and the constitutions of many countries. They are universal, and define how you may expect to live as a human being, with freedom, dignity, and equality.

However, there continue to be many abuses of human rights in the world today. People are imprisoned for practicing their religion or expressing their point of view. Moreover, one billion people lack access to education, and over 27 million are still in slavery.
