Council of Europe in the EHEA Ministerial Conference

The Council of Europe calls for the strengthening of fundamental values and inclusiveness during the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) Ministerial Conference organized in Paris from 23 to 25 of May.

Addressing the conference, Sjur Bergan, Head of the Education Department of the Council of Europe underlined that “….that breaches to our fundamental values endanger our common basis and our common pursuit to quality. Excellence cannot be based on stiffed questions, political conformism and the closing of minds……..We hope to contribute to making our value bases a key element in the further development of the EHEA”

Ministers responsible for Higher Education from 48 states celebrated the progress made in the framework of the Bologna Process and defined new commitments for the further development of the European Higher Education Area through the adoption of the Paris Communiqué.

The Council of Europe is a consultative member of the Bologna Follow Up Group (BFUG) and Board. In the 2015-18 work program it was a member of the Advisory Groups on the Belarus Roadmap, Non-implementation, and the review of the Diploma Supplement. With UNESCO, the Council of Europe is the co-depository of the Lisbon Recognition Convention, the only legally binding text of the EHEA, which had been ratified by all EHEA member States.
