On the 16 June 2022, the Dublin City University conferred the award of Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) on Sjur Bergan, the former Head of the Education Department of the Council of Europe.

In his address Professor Daire Keogh, the President of the Dublin City University’ said: ‘Sjur Bergan is an internationally renowned authority on Higher Education who has made a major contribution in this field. His leadership and his commitment to values of inclusion and academic freedom have had a major impact on European policy, creating new avenue and opportunities for educational cooperation and collaboration. It is entirely fitting that Sjur should receive the Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa), the highest award that this University can bestow’.
