The launch of the national versions of the HELP courses on Child-friendly Justice and Violence against Women/Domestic Violence was organised jointly with the National School of Justice of Ukraine and the National Academy of Prosecution of Ukraine in Kyiv on 24 January. Master trainers trained by the project for both courses in October 2017 and more than 70 trainees of the first on-line training attended the kick-off meeting.
It was the first launch of the Child-friendly Justice course since its finalisation at the end 2017 and the second one of the Violence against Women/Domestic Violence course, after it was first launched in Armenia last December.
The event started with opening speeches from Mårten Ehnberg, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine, Natalia Federovych, Vice Minister, Ministry of Social Policy, Natalia Shuklina, Vice Rector of the National School of Judges of Ukraine and Georgii Popov, Vice Rector of the National Academy of Prosecution of Ukraine.
The Council of Europe HELP programme and its courses on Child-friendly Justice and on Violence against Women/Domestic Violence were presented by Regina Jensdottir, Head of the Council of Europe Children’s Rights Division and Coordinator for the Rights of the Child; and Marta Becerra, Head of capacity and Co-operation projects Unit, in the Council of Europe Equality Division.
The participants benefitted from two panel discussions on key legal developments. The first panel comprised interventions from Nikolai Kuleba, Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for Children’s Rights, Olga Poyedynok, Post-doctoral fellow at T. Shevchenko University of Kyiv, Judge Pavlo Perfomenko and human rights defender Kateryna Borozdina (from NGO “LaStrada - Ukraine”). The second panel had interventions from Marta Becerra (moderator), Aksana Filipishyna, Commissioner Representative for Observance of the Rights of the Child, Non-Discrimination and Gender Equality, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Nadiya Stephaniv, judge of the Supreme Court of Ukraine on violence against women, Maryna Lehenka, prosecutor on violence against women and domestic violence, Head of Unit on Legal Expertise of Law Department of the General prosecutor Office of Ukraine and Larysa Denysenko, human rights defender and member of the Interdepartmental Coordination Council on Juvenile Justice.
The event continued with a presentation of the HELP e-learning platform and the course pages, followed by two working groups during which the participants could interact with their future tutors for the practical arrangements to be made for the implementation of the two courses.
The event also hosted an award ceremony for the newly certified HELP tutors of the two courses, who received their certificates from Mårten Ehnberg after having successfully completed the training of trainers session in September 2017.
