On 3 May 2018, the HELP course on Child-friendly justice and Children’s Rights was launched in Albania in cooperation with the National Chamber of Advocates. A selected group of Albanian lawyers participated in the event prior to the 3-months implementation of the tutored online course.

Participants could benefit from an extensive introduction to the Council of Europe legal standards and practical guidelines in the field of child-friendly justice, primarily the Guidelines on the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on Child-friendly justice.

Moreover, Benoît Van Keirsbilck, Director of Defence for Children-Belgium and member of the HELP working group on Child-friendly justice, guided participants through the non-judicial proceedings and the main challenges of interacting with children in the judicial system.

The HELP course was developed jointly with the Council of Europe Children’s Rights Division to strengthen and harmonise the knowledge of the relevant European standards on child-friendly justice across the Council of Europe member States. It aims to ensure that professionals working with the competent authorities have comprehensive and professional knowledge of the European standards in the field.

After the completion of the course, every user will have access to the Albanian version upon the creation of an account in the HELP online platform.

On 4 May, the HELP course was presented to the staff of the People’s Advocates, several NGOs and students from the Law Faculty of Tirana.

The events were organised in the framework of the HELP in the Western Balkans project, funded by the Human Rights Trust Fund (HRTF) and targeting Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”.
