Peer Review for Emergency Sheltering in Greece

How can we estimate the sheltering needs of the population in case a disaster occurs? What is the most efficient sheltering solution, and how should it be managed? How can we ensure that people´s needs are addressed and respected? What is the role of regional and local authorities, civil society and other stakeholders? The Council of Europe organised a Peer Review exercise in Athens, from 26 to 28 of November, in order to provide support to the Greek General Secretariat of Civil Protection in finding answers to these questions. The participating Peers were civil servants from France, Italy, Portugal and Spain with extensive experience in civil protection and emergency sheltering. They shared their experiences, discussing the best practices in their own countries and providing valuable opinions, which will feed into the technical and economic study on emergency sheltering prepared by the Center for Security Studies (KE.ME.A.). The study will consequently support the Greek government in its policy-making process.

The activity was organised by the Centre of Expertise for Good Governance in cooperation with the National Technical University of Athens, the local partner in this project, together with KEMEA.
