Greek Islands Establish an Inter-Municipal Cooperation Network

The Centre of Expertise for Good Governance promotes innovative solutions to improve the performance of public authorities. Under the framework of the Technical Assistance Project for Delivering Good Governance in Greece, co-funded by the European Union, the Centre of Expertise has supported the creation of the Inter-Municipal Cooperation Network "AIGEIS", whose members include the island municipalities of Agathonisi, Astypalaia, Kalymnos, Leipsoi, Leros, Patmos and Tilos.

"At last the Network is a fact, as its statute has been approved by the Court of First Instance of Kos and thus obtained legal status. Throughout this effort, Council of Europe's role in both guiding and planning was determinant." - wrote Mr Dimitrios Diakomichalis, the Mayor of Kalymnos.

The Centre of Expertise will continue supporting the strengthening of Inter-Municipal Cooperation in Greece. It is currently working with experts to develop a Greek IMC Handbook, based on the CoE IMC Toolkit, which will provide useful guidance to the Greek municipalities interested in embarking on this challenging but rewarding endeavour.
