Murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia

Following the violent death of a Maltese investigative journalist, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, has stated: “I am appalled by the brutal death of Maltese journalist and blogger Ms Daphne Caruana Galizia, in a car bombing yesterday in Malta. As expressed by the Prime Minister of Malta, a thorough investigation is necessary to find those responsible for her death.

For many years Ms Caruana Galizia has been investigating and reporting on cases of alleged corruption. The work of investigative journalists contributes to strengthening transparency and democratic accountability and our member States must redouble efforts to ensure their effective protection.

Ms Daphne Caruana Galizia is the fifth journalist killed in Council of Europe member States in 2017 and the 21st reported since the Council of Europe Platform for the Protection of Journalists became operational in April 2015.
The Council of Europe will continue its tireless work on the protection of journalists."
